SURF PSYCHOLOGY
Surf Psychology is the understanding of the mind of a surfer and the unique psychological challenges that arise when:
-
We attempt to master a sport
-
In an unpredictable and powerful natural environment
-
While navigating the unspoken rules of a deeply rooted subculture
The ocean is not a neutral playing field. It activates the nervous system. It confronts identity.
It exposes fear, ego, self-worth, and resilience often within minutes.
Surf Psychology studies these dynamics and applies psychological understanding directly to the surfing experience.
I have worked to define and articulate Surf Psychology as a distinct field, integrating psychological science, years of therapeutic work with surfers, nervous system awareness, and lived surf experience into one cohesive framework.
My Approch & Guiding Beliefs
What holds you back in surfing often mirrors what holds you back in life
The ocean reveals patterns quickly.
Fear is not the problem - how you relate to it is
Fear holds you back because of the narrative you have created around it. When you understand that narrative and how it came to be you can start to change your relationship to the fear.
The nervous system determines performance more than willpower does
We cannot learn and perform when we don’t feel safe. The ocean is both a trigger and a teacher. When approached consciously, it becomes a powerful environment for growth.
The ocean is a place of growth and healing
A surfer’s deep connection to nature and the ocean provides a profoundly healing and grounding force.
Our believes form our experience, not the other way around
The mind is the filter through which we experience the world, and we can choose what filter we use We can either choose a positive and growth minded filter that will propel us forward or one that holds us back.
About Me
I am a psychologist, hypnotherapist, surfer, and the founder of Surf Psychology.
I hold a Master’s degree in Psychology from Lund University, with specializations in Neuropsychology and Social Psychology and I’m a certified hypnotherapist. For nearly two decades, I have worked within the field of psychology and mental health in therapeutic and developmental settings.
Surfing has been a central part of my life alongside my professional path. Over time, I began to see how the psychological patterns I worked with professionally, fear responses, nervous system activation, self-criticism, avoidance, and identity were vividly present in the surfing experience.
That intersection became the foundation of my work.
Drawing from formal psychological training, therapeutic experience, hypnotherapy, nervous system awareness, and lived surf experience, I developed Surf Psychology as a framework for understanding the unique mental demands of surfing. My work bridges psychological depth with embodied experience in the ocean, helping surfers transform fear, build confidence, and shift the subconscious patterns that hold them back.
